Roald Dahl’s hilarious and outrageous novels have made him one of the most popular children’s authors of all time. Here, the author himself brings five of his wickedly funny stories to life:

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory:
Willy Wonka’s famous chocolate factory is opening at last!

James and the Giant Peach:
A little magic can take you a long way.

Fantastic Mr. Fox:
Nobody outfoxes Fantastic Mr. Fox!

The Enormous Crocodile:
Watch out, kids!

The Magic Finger:
What happens when the hunter becomes the hunted?

About the Author
Roald Dahl is considered one of the most beloved writers of our time. Although he passed away in 1990, his popularity continues to increase as his fantastic novels, including The Witches and Matilda, delight an ever-growing legion of fans.

Roald Dahl’s collection of stories for younger children includes classics like CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY and JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH. There are also lesser-known tales like FANTASTIC MR. FOX, in which a loving papa fox outwits a farmer to feed his kits, and THE ENORMOUS CROCODILE, in which a greedy reptile hunts for a young child to eat. In each story the underdog characters triumph, and evil is punished in intriguing ways. For example, the girl in THE MAGIC FINGER shows hunters what it feels like to be hunted. The author reads all these magical tales in his elegant British tones, his pacing showing tenderness for his characters. The excellence of carefully chosen rhythms and rhymes resounds throughout.

Check the latest The Roald Dahl Audio CD Collection Price here

Fantasy Children Audio Books – The Roald Dahl Audio CD Collection Author Biography

Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was born in Llandaff, South Wales, and went to Repton School in England. His parents were Norwegian, so holidays were spent in Norway. As he explains in Boy, he turned down the idea of university in favor of a job that would take him to’a wonderful faraway place. In 1933 he joined the Shell Company, which sent him to Mombasa in East Africa. When World War II began in 1939 he became a fighter pilot and in 1942 was made assistant air attachι in Washington, where he started to write short stories. His first major success as a writer for children was in 1964. Thereafter his children’s books brought him increasing popularity, and when he died children mourned the world over, particularly in Britain where he had lived for many years. The BFG is dedicated to the memory of Roald Dahls eldest daughter, Olivia, who died from measles when she was seven – the same age at which his sister had died (fron appendicitis) over forty years before. Quentin Blake, the first Children’s Laureate of the United Kingdom, has illustrated most of Roald Dahl’s children’s books.

My 8 year old LOVES these stories. They are narrated by Roald Dahl, so are read brilliantly.
What a fantastic imagination he had to write these wonderful stories. Highly recommended for all kids over 7.

Wonderful

5.0 out of 5 stars

These CDs are terrific. My 4-, 6-, and 8-yr old love them and ask to listen to them in the car over and over again. Be aware that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is an abridged reading (although still quite long and more than sufficient, especially for a younger crowd). A particularly nice touch is listening to them being read by Roald Dahl himself: he puts so much dry humor and emphasis into his tone that it gives the stories a really great feel.

Dahl’s own readings hold up remarkably well

4.0 out of 5 stars

This Roald Dahl review is a departure from my previous classical music reviews. However it’s one of my other interests outside music and so I’ll review this collection of Dahl’s own readings.

Roald Dahl recorded these audio books for Caedmon in the mid 1970s, before he came to write The Twits, The BFG, The Witches and Matilda. In any case these selections are superb documents of Dahl reading his own stories. Some people might feel upset that Dahl is not dramatic in any way, and some may complain that these recordings of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach are abridged so that each book tapes up one LP. However they are excellent recordings and they still manage to sparkle with Dahl’s trademark writing and storytelling style.

The recording of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory gives us an excellent reading of the book even in an abridged form. In this recording, Dahl might sound tentative at first because this was the first time he was recording his work. This abridged version covers the salient episodes of the book and paces itself very well. Some might not be too keen on Dahl’s brisk pace that fitted this recording onto one LP. However Dahl is still able to adjust his voice and tone for the various situations and emotions.

Dahl is perhaps more seasoned in the readings of Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Enormous Crocodile and The Magic Finger. These books are presented unabridged, so there is less cramming and compression. Dahl’s pace in these stories is relaxed, and Dahl captures the right moods for each characters. Dahl perfectly catches the slyness of the Enormous Crocodile himself and is superb when he tells of the strange happenings of the Greggs after the girl punishes them with the magic finger. And in Fantastic Mr. Fox Dahl makes the three nasty farmers sound horrid and mean, and hell-bent on catching Mr. Fox and all the woodland animals.

The least successful reading is James and the Giant Peach. When I say ‘least successful’ I mean that the abridgement leaves out too many important episodes. It is too heavy on the first part of the book in the house of Sponge and Spiker, and it cuts out the middle part of the journey across the Atlantic. We don’t hear about the danger with the Cloud Men or James rescuing the Centipede from the ocean. So even though Dahl reads well, it’s easy to feel disappointed with the quality of the abridgement.

In spite of its flaws, this is still a superb collection of Dahl’s own readings and one of the few available audio documents of him reading his children’s books.

It’s also worth noting that these recordings use the American editions of the stories rather than the British edition. So in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory American currency is used in place of British currency and candy bar is used in place of chocolate bar.

Wonderful story collection

5.0 out of 5 stars

I purchased this Audio CD collection for my 8 year old son, who enjoys all of the Roald Dahl books. The audio cd is a great addition to reading his favorite stories. Beautifully narrated and easy to follow, my son can really connect the events of the book with the audio narration to give him a big picture and better comprehension. We love Roald Dahl, and this cd is a great addition to our collection.

A Must Have

5.0 out of 5 stars

As a child, Roald Dahl books captivated me. Now my 4-year-old daugher delights in her ‘rest’ breaks each afternoon as well on long car trips, when we put on one of these stories. She enjoys the fanciful tales narrated by the author himself, and the stories are enjoyable for adults and children alike. The stories are abridged – but this makes many of them manageable for one sitting, which is ideal for the younger listener. We never bore of them!

3.0 out of 5 stars

I bought this for the Kindergarten rest time we have each day for Extended Care. It depends on the mood of the children as Roald Dahl since the kids were ‘bored’ at first since Dahl’s voice is actually not as animated as I thought it would be. However the kids have calmed down a bit and like to listen to him. It’s nice to have since they do know the stories but I do wish it was more ‘story’ like. If I recall correctly I don’t think there is any music in the background either.

I love Roald Dahl

4.0 out of 5 stars

Roald Dahl is hands down the best author I read as a child (I am now in my mid-twenties). I bought this CD set because his stories are amazing and I do a lot of driving. I would strongly recommend this set, however, there were a couple small disappointments that led to my 4 star rating (these would not likely affect the average person):
1. the stories are abridged, so while still fun to hear, some parts of the stories are missing detail.
2. I am familiar with the English (UK) books, so I was disappointed to hear a couple North American tweaks (ie. Charlie found a dollar bill in the snow rather than the British coin he found in my book).
Overall, this is a great set that I would recommend to anyone.

Mr. Dahl reads his own stories

5.0 out of 5 stars

I purchased this recording on cassette at a flea market and have been absolutely delighted with it – oh, yeah, my 7-year-old likes it, too! Roald Dahl’s voice fleshes out the stories and characters, as well as his typical dry observations, in a refreshing departure that satisfies kids and adults alike (we’ve been testing it). Remember the songs the Oompa-Loompas sang in ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ or the poems in ‘James and the Giant Peach?’ I found them to be a bit disruptive when I read those books as a child; didn’t ‘get’ them. Hearing Mr. Dahl read them really allowed me to enjoy them as well.
One word to the content: I’d forgotten that Roald Dahl does write (and read) about some tough stuff, ‘warts and all,’ as it were. Sponge and Speicker are hateful and abusive to James. The three farmers in ‘The Fantastic Mr. Fox’ are portrayed in disgusting detail. James loses his parents scarily and suddenly when they are killed in New York (richly enough, they are eaten by a rhinocerous, which are neither native to New York nor carniverous). It’s a tough world in his books. Yet it’s a wondrous, fanciful one. I want my son to hang on to the perfect illusion of the latter and learn about the former aspect of the world as late as possible. He’s already got hip to the tough world bit, though; so we’ll aim to integrate life’s knocks and laughs as best we can.
The first words I hear when I start the car engine are ‘Kid’s tape!’ sometimes alternating with, ‘Kid’s tape, please?’ or ‘Would you please put on a kid’s tape when you get the chance?’ (Guess who suggested that last version?) Suffice to say, I hear a lot of ‘kid’s tapes,’ so I prefer ones I can enjoy as well. This is one of those. The recordings are long, too, like this r-

Grandkids love these CDs!

5.0 out of 5 stars

I ordered this CD set for my grandkids to listen to. They have ‘joint custody’ of the set. It rotates from house to house by the week. This is part of a circulating set that they listen to a bedtime. On busy nights, when Mom and Dad don’t have time to read, this satisfies their desire for a bedtime story, plus it lasts longer than a short story or two. They sometimes drift off to sleep listening to the CDs. With 11 grandkids, this comes in handy. I’m very glad I bought this set and am so impressed that it is read by the author. This way we get the intended inflection and each nuance.

Even though most children audio books have an element of science-fiction and although all of them are fantasy based, some kids story books are particularly science fiction and fantasy based. In our review of this week, we will be focusing on three science fiction and fantasy children audio books that we hope you will like.

Children Audio Books – How to Cheat a Dragon’s Curse

This children audio book goes for about 3 hours and 18 minutes in length, and has been published by Hachette Childrens Books. The publisher summary is as follows:

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III was a Viking hero – dashing, brave, and ever so clever. But even Viking heroes have to begin somewhere…. Can Hiccup find the antidote to deadly Vorpentitis and fight the Doomfang? Can he brave the axe of Norbert the Nutjob and be the Hero yet again?
Reviews about this book point out that one doesn’t have to be a kid to enjoy the story, and that one just has to use his or her inner child imagination. They also praise the intonations of David Tennant’s voice (the audio reader) that keeps the reader in the thick of the action adventure tale.

Children Audio Books – The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

This children audio book goes for about 2 hours and 29 minutes in length. The story written by L. Frank Baum is narrated by Liza Ross. The publisher summary is as follows:
This great children’s classic, written in 1900 and immortalised in the Judy Garland film The Wizard of Oz, retains its charm in this reading by Liza Ross. Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion are all here in L. Frank Baum’s literary technicolor – along with some of the music that made the film unforgettable.

This children audio book goes for about 31 minutes in length. The story written by Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen is narrated by Polly Adams and Cassandra Morris. The publisher summary is the following:
The classroom is decorated as Dinosaur Land, but Ms. Frizzle, inspired by an archeological dig, craves a more authentic experience. The Magic School Bus turns into a time machine and transports the class back millions of years to an adventure in which they learn about dinosaurs, their habitats and diets, and even a Maiasaura nesting ground.

Kids Story Books: Anansi the Spider: A Tale from the Ashanti

In our African Fairy Tales Kids Story Books Reviews, we will be regularly considering the stories of Anansi. In Anansi the spider, Anansi, one of the great folk heroes of the world, is a rogue, wise, loveable creature who triumphs over bigger foes.

Kids Story Books: Anansi the Spider Review

In this post selected Kids Story Book “Anansi the Spider”, Anansi begins a long and difficult journey. He is at times threatened by a fish and at other times by a falcon, and he is saved from terrible fates by his sons. Though Anansi wonders which of his sons he should reward. Finally, calling upon the God of All Things Nyame, Anansi finds a way to solve his predicament in a resourceful and touching way.

Kids Story Books: Anansi the Spider Author

Gerald McDermott, the author of this tale, merges the old with the new, the rich with the bold colors of traditional African design motifs and authentic Ashanti language rhythms. Anansi the Spider received a wide acclaim and it was named a Caldecott Honor Book. The author apart from this tale, has retold and illustrated a lot of other folktales and myths, including “Arrow to the Sun: A Pueblo Indian Tale”, “Musicians of the sun”, and a number of trickster tales from around the world.

Kids Story Books – Anansi the Spider Customers Reviews

Below are some customer reviews taken from Amazon Reviews:
Vibrant, vivid illustration and a wonderful tale
16 of 17 people found the following review helpful.

The Anansi stories have been handed down through generations of Ashanti culture. This book is a wonderful, vibrant and vivid story for children of all ages. Born in Ghana I left at aged 3, leaving much of the Ghanaian culture behind. At aged 30 I can still remember a song about Anansi the spider, the only remnants left of my native tongue. I was given the Anansi book as a child, it captivated me, I read it over and over again, and it provided a connection to my past. At 16, I spent hours crafting a cushion embroidered an illustration from the book that was a childhood favorite. Sadly, the book was lost and I never thought I could get it again. Now, some 14 years since I last saw the book I can still visualize the pictures and hear the wonderful tale of Anansi the spider, his sons and the moon. I have just bought two copies, one for my niece and one for my two year old daughter. I absolutely cannot wait to read them again and again and pass this memorable story to a new generation.

Anansi Makes Me Laugh…
10 of 11 people found the following review helpful.
I am a big fan of the Anansi tales, and the spider’s adventures are delightful as well as thought-provoking. For edutainment (educational entertainment) and discussion, I include them in my high school / college level introduction to mythology / humanities survey courses. All ages can enjoy a clever trickster hero who possesses many human qualities, the good and bad–who makes us think about our own deeds and behavior.

In Anansi The Spider: A Tale from the Ashanti, Gerald McDermott retells an Anansi story with warmth, cultural sensitivity, and bright, attention-seizing illustrations. Among the children’s books about Anansi, McDermott’s efforts stand in a unique place because the text is used sparingly and with great effect, conveying important events only and not burying key ideas in lavish descriptions or dialogues. In this book, the elaborate, geometric illustrations paint the “descriptions” that the text omits.

Features that I like…

The map in the opening that shows the continent of Africa and the country of Ghana. (I’m always happy to see a bit of geography dropped into stories, especially those designed for children.)

The Prologue, which describes the importance of folklore, mythology, and legends. I especially appreciate this statement: “Folklore prepares man for adult life. It places him within his culture.”

Rather than beginning the story with the familiar “Once upon a time…,” the author uses “Time was…” which is cool!

Each of the spider sons in the story is unique in design, appearance, and talent, which makes him easy (and fun) to identify as the tale unfolds. The six sons are See Trouble, Road Builder, River Drinker, Game Skinner, Stone Thrower, and Cushions.

The character of Anansi is rendered with an expressive personality and face while his sons’ faces are not shown–just their designs, bodies, and talents. Anansi’s face changes emotions based on his experiences, and this would be an excellent teaching element for very young children upon hearing / seeing the story.

Themes & Talking Points the book offers:

Counting, colors, shapes, animals, teamwork, family, intro to Africa [Very Young Children]

Reading; Cause & Effect; Critical Thinking & Response; African Culture. How does Anansi get into and out of trouble? // Each spider is an individual with a specific skill or trait; each spider has a place in the family. What does this suggest about the culture of the Ashanti? // The rescue of Anansi is really a team effort by the sons, but who should get the reward? Does the ending solve this problem? [For children 5-12]

Reading & Design; Symbolism; Critical Analysis; Author Intent; Culture. Why did the author / illustrator choose not to show the faces of the six sons in the story? How does this choice affect the story? How does Anansi’s face tell his story? What is the relationship between a son’s name and his unique design? In what instances is Anansi’s face NOT shown and why? What lessons are taught in this tale? What universal themes are present? Does this book deserve its “honor” designation? [For tweens through college students]

We love Anansi!
9 of 10 people found the following review helpful.

My 18 month old son loves the artwork in this book. There is a lot to talk about on each page. For the first time it seems that my son is following the story and not just dealing with one page at a time. He waits eagerly for the page when Anansi is swallowed by a fish (don’t worry it is not violent in any way!) Since there are 6 spider sons there are lots of opportunities for counting. My 18 month old can now count to 6.

Children Audio Books (also recognized as audio books) can be good fun for boys and girls, irrespective of whether they are enjoying them at home or while travelling. If you are going on a summer family trip with your own small children, be sure and carry a number of mp3 audiobooks with you; they could help to make the car, train, or plane trip much more enjoyable for your young children. There are at the same time a lot of other advantages of listening to children audio books. You will definitely find that audiobook editions of a large number of famous ebooks for young ones are on the market. Below is a sampling of some interesting Children Audio Books.

Your small children won’t be able to resist the humorous poems set to music and sung by Prelutsky, who also plays the guitar together with John Guth. The musical arrangements by Guth feature bass guitar, mandolin, percussion, and keyboards. I know from practical experience that 2- to 4-year-olds really like to listen to this recording time and time again.

Children Audio Books 2. The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Book 1)

The actual collection has confirmed to be tremendously famous with middle school learners, as well as upper elementary age youngsters. This fantasy series features an captivating middle school pupil, Percy Jackson, and the fantastic revelations and journeys that change his life. Author Rick Riordan includes a lot of Ancient mythology in the series, to superb benefit.

Children Audio Books 3. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (Harry Potter Series, Book One)

With this fantasy novel by J. K. Rowlings, you are going to appreciate hrs of mystery, suspense, wizardry, and pleasure. I’d advise this for families with youngsters 8-10 years old and older.

Everybody has a poor day, and the entire household will get a kick out of Alexander’s problems in Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst. The audio book release of the tale is read by actress Blythe Danner. While I advise it for four to eight year olds, it will probably attract dads and moms at the same time.

Children Audio Books in a Trip

Children’s audio books (also known as audiobooks) are great fun for kids, whether they are enjoying them at home or while traveling. If you are going on a summer vacation with your children, be sure and take some audio books with you; they’ll make the car, train, or plane trip much more fun for your children. There are also a lot of other benefits of listening to children audio books . You’ll find that audiobook editions of many popular books for kids are available. Below is a sampling of them: We tried to concentrate on specific audio books that are quite new in concept or style:

1. The Frogs Wore Red Suspenders

(one of the Children Audio Books that are not well known)

The audio book version of the Frogs Wore Red Suspenders reveals another of the talents of author Jack Prelutsky; he is also a musician. Your children won’t be able to resist the funny poems set to music and sung by Prelutsky, who also plays the guitar along with John Guth. The musical arrangements by Guth feature bass guitar, mandolin, percussion, and keyboards. I know from experience that 2 – to 4 -year -old children love to listen to this recording again and again.

2. The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Book 1): (One of the modern Children Audio Books)
Introduce your kids to the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series with the audiobook version of the first book, The Lightning Thief. The series has proven to be enormously popular with middle school students, as well as upper elementary age kids. This fantasy series features an appealing middle school student, Percy Jackson, and the amazing revelations and adventures that change his life. Author Rick Riordan incorporates a lot of Greek mythology in the series, to great effect.

3. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (Harry Potter Series, Book One): (A new kind of Children Audio books that looks like a classic)
Introduce your kids to the Harry Potter series (or begin rereading them all), starting with the audiobook version of the first book in the series, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. With this fantasy novel by J. K. Rowlings, you’ll enjoy hours of mystery, suspense, wizardry, and fun. I’d recommend this for families with children eight years old and older.

4. Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day (A new kind of Children Audio Books that your kids will adore)
Everyone has a bad day, and the entire family will get a kick out of Alexander’s troubles in Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst. The audio book edition of the story is read by actress Blythe Danner. While I recommend it for four to eight year olds, it will appeal to parents also.

6. A Bear Called Paddington (A new concept of Children Audio Books)
The story of the little bear from darkest Peru who travels to England and finds himself on Paddington Station is a classic. The little bear is adopted by the Brown family who name him Paddington. Paddington gets into all kinds of amusing difficulties, and the Browns find their lives turned upside down. This children’s audio book is read by actor and comedian Stephen Fry, whose English accent and sympathetic reading make it a delight. I recommend it for ages 5-9.

Creating Personalized Kids Audio Books

Kids Audio Books are a great resource, but… only if you can make your children listen to them…

I came across a new method for creating children interest for my kids in Audio Books, that I want to share with you: It is not about fiction or non fiction audio books that you can read and play to your children. It’s not about kids story books that you can read, grab and play. It’s a revolutionary concept that I call “Creating Personalized Kids Audio Books“, and it’s as easy as writing.

It all came up to my mind when lately, one of my kids was having problems listening at school, or obeying orders, and in one word was having behavioral issues both at school and at home. Usually, in these cases, all parents can do is repeat time and time again to their children how they should behave, maybe recur to punishment if the child doesn’t do as directed. But I acted differently. I wrote my own story about a kid named Michael in the same situation as my child, having the same problems and acting the same way, and then in the fictional story, I related how Michael’s behavior affected his life, his friends, his playing, and all things dear to him (the same things that are dear to my kid).

Then, I transformed the story I wrote in mp3 format (not by reading it), but by using natural voices software, and I began playing it to my kid. The experience was amazing! Can you imagine a kid begging to listen to a story preaching him how to act or react before sleeping. This was very funny. Moreover, my kid began asking for a follow-up for the story.

So, in my opinion this is a new way of raising your kids, by giving them indirect advice and preaching through fictional audio books that they would love and ask to listen to.

In case you need a demonstration of the above process, just write a short essay about a fictional story of a children having a behavioral pattern, send it to me, and I will process it and send it back to you in mp3 format so that you could try for yourself.
